How do I find/choose a therapist?

Finding a therapist can be difficult.  If you have insurance, it may be a good idea to check with your insurance company to identify in-network therapists. Psychology Today is good resource as well.  You can search for therapists with the criteria you are looking for - a specific area of town, insurances accepted, types of therapy provided, as well as modality of therapy.

Once you identify a potential therapist, reach out and request a consultation.  Think of the consultation as a two way interview.  you are interviewing the therapist to see if you think you can build a trusting relationship with them and if they are experienced in helping clients with similar needs.  The therapist is gathering information to ensure a good fit as well - do we accept their payment method? Do we offer the types of therapy the potential client is seeking?  Do we have the experience and training required to assist the potential client and the stated needs?  A good therapist is looking to reduce the barriers to treatment, so assessing these factors early on can help the client find the best therapist fit.

What can I expect at my first visit?

First visits usually last between 45-60 minutes and are structured in three parts: Introductions and education, history taking, and planning.

During Introductions and education, the therapist and client start to build a relationship and discuss demographic information, financial policies, risks and benefits of treatment, and confidentiality requirements.  The majority of the session is spent in history taking.  The therapist will ask many questions to learn about who your are and what has lead you to their office today. The final portion of the session will be spent in planning for the next session and setting priorities for treatment.

Will insurance cover my therapy?

Short  answer is YES! With Mental Health parity laws being passed in the previous  decades, insurance companies are required to cover mental health treatment.

Unfortunately, how much of the treatment costs the the insurance company will cover, and availability of paneled and in-network providers varies greatly between insurance companies and plans.  The best way to know your financial responsibility for mental health treatment and therapy is to reach out to your insurance company.  Many companies have webistes you can access your benefit infomration, but you can also call the number onthe back of your insurance card to speak to a respresentative who can explain your financial responsibility.

Another consideration is that some therapists don't accept insurance reimbursement.  This is called self-pay.

We have therapists that accept both insurance and self-pay. For self-pay clients, we offer superbills that can be submitted to your insurance company for partial reimbursement.

How does tele-therapy work?

Tele-therapy, telehealth, or virtual therapy are different ways of describing synchronous therapy provided over technology when the client and therapist are in different locations. At Karuna Therapy Solutions, we use a HIPAA compliant telehealth platform that allows the client and therapist to meet in a virtual space.  The platform can be accessed using a desktop, tablet or smart phone.  Clients are sent a unique link for each therapy session.

We ask that clients attend virtual sessions from a quiet, private location where they can be alone, for their confidentiality.

Though teletherapy is very convenient, there are some extra requirements.  You can expect your therapist to ask your exact location during the session.  This is important for safety reasons and because the client needs to be physically located in a state where the therapist is located.
